Thanks so much to all the cookers for their hard work during the 2008 event. The 2009 Chili Cookoff promises to be HUGE so make sure you get your entry forms in early as there are limits as to how many cooks may participate!

Each spring on the first Saturday in May, James River Runners hosts at their base camp at Hatton Ferry "The Great James River Chili Cook-Off"! (directions to JRR) The event is sponsored by James River Runners, LLC, radio station 3WV, and Budweiser (JW Sieg Distributors) for the benefit of the Scottsville Volunteer Rescue Squad. The Southern Albemarle event is the largest fund raiser for the squad each year. This yearly event was held on Saturday, May 3, 2008 and and was the unbelievable 28th anniversary of this hugely popular fund raiser!! We are pleased to announce that over the years the cook-off has now raised over $231,000 for the squad! Previous funds from this charitable occasion have been used to purchase state of the art river rescue equipment and education for Swift Water Rescue training for the SVRS.

here are 25 entry spots available. First place prize is $200, second place prize $100, third place prize by Budweiser, and a best "set up" prize by Budweiser plus $100. Free beverages and t-shirts for each contestant! Please join us for these and other activities including a live performance by that deadly duo ... Steve and Timi Ryalls band! Set up for cookers (one cook and one helper ONLY) is from 7AM to 9AM with judging promptly at 1PM (those who wish to set up Friday afternoon are welcome). The general public will be admitted starting at 11AM ($15 each, 6 - 12 years old $8 each, under 6 free).

A: Chili will be judged on the following:

1.Chili must have a unique name (10%) ----- 1 to 10 points awarded.
2. Meat or vegetables, beans, spices,texture, and overall quality (90%) ----- 1 to 18 points awarded for each category.
3. A separate category for best set will have its own prize. (1- 100 points)

 

B: Rules:

1. Teams to consist of no more than 1 cook and 1 helper. Some type of tarp or other
    covering is necessary to be over your cooking setup.
2. 3 gallons of chili a minimum - although much more appreciated(remember there will be a large hungry crowd).
3. Chili must be prepared on site.

4. Pre-soaked beans OK.
5. Pre-mixed sauce OK --- (not pre-cooked).
6. Set-up limited to 12' by 12' area.
7. Space limited to first 25 entries.
8. Entry deadline Wednesday, April 30, 2008.
9. Entry fee of $14 per team payable to Scottsville Rescue Squad.
10. Teams to furnish:
----- a. Non-electrical cooking apparatus (ie. coleman stove, charcoal grill, firewood, pots and utensils)
----- b. Table(s), chairs, etc. for preparation
----- c. Banners, signs, appropriate and unique setups
